If the gods are kind I will also finish the bird icons I am madly working on. 2019 has been a whirlwind, we launched our oldest homeschooled lad off to study engineering, I taught 12 dye classes, reorganized my studio, and made many scarves. Then in October, the residency up at the lovely @souwester helped me to clarify and recommit to creating art, as well as the more bread & butter aspects of my creative life, like making scarves and teaching classes. As a female fiber artist I have always resisted categorizing and seperating art from craft. For me it has always been a very fluid continuum. Having seen the artistic value in the handwork of my immensely creative and innovative farm wife forebears, helped me notice how within the dominant paradigm "craft" has often been synonymous with women's work, while "art" has been what we call the techniques in common use by men. When I took time away from the studio to raise my beloved boys this became even more stark. I found parenting to be in many ways the most creative of vocations, and have witnessed children as incredible conceptual artists. This reinforced to me the false denigration of craft. I have always sought to imbue meaning into what I make with my hands, from making food with love, to using the ironing process to consciously call in blessings for the recipient of a finished garment. And, over time I have come to a place in which I choose to define some of what I do as Art, distinct from my other efforts. Not as an ego trip, but more as a spiritual practice, creation as an offering. Crossing over into art on the continuum, happens when I choose to approach it differently. Art has become a land whose boundaries are based almost entirely on context, and less on medium or technique. Sometimes cloth is just cloth, and sometimes it is something holy. Just as sometimes my classes are simply classes, and other times they are more, The Red Tent retreats for instance have been equal parts art installation, performance art, and collaborative spiritual services.
